My First Experience With Korean BBQ!!

Posted by on August 8, 2013

Disclosure: I was given a complimentary meal by Yellow Cow on behalf of this post.  All opinions are my own.

I’m a typical Minnesotan, in that, the foods I eat, are pretty bland, and also pretty American.  However, since moving to California I have been more open with trying different varieties of food including many seafood options.  So when Yellow Cow invited me out to try Korean BBQ, I said “heck yes.”

Yellow Cow is located in Gardena, CA, and throughout the night, many people were walking in to experience authentic Korean BBQ.  And can I tell you how excited with how close this location is to me?

When first entering you will notice the grills all lined up along the tables.  Menus are then handed to you, and yes, authentic Korean writing is throughout the menu.  But, if its your first time trying Korean BBQ, have no fear, the wait staff is very helpful in explaining how the experience works, and offers many great recommendations.

We quickly decided on combo two, which gives us 2 meats to choose from, and one seafood.  We decided on Spicy Marinated Pork, and the Thin Slice Marinated Beef strips along with Shrimp.

David also chose to try out a bottle of Soju, a Korean alcoholic drink:

The drink, comparable to Vodka, although, a bit sweeter, definitely has a kick to it.  Was recommended to pair with a slice of lemon.  The alcohol content for this bottle was 20%.

And then the sides started to come out: SantaBarbaraCircusRedwoodGrille 1361

Sides of Cucumbers, Korean Beans, KimChi, Potato Salad, and more.  When the sides came out we were encouraged to try the different dishes to discover what we liked.  And if we ran out they’d happily refill us.

And then it was time for the meat to be cooked.  Starting off with one of the meats, we threw it into the grill.  If it’s your first time, the servers will help you with this by elevating the heat, and also coming around to turn and stir your meat for you.  As you get more comfortable you’ll want to start cooking your own meat.

Once the meat was done, grab a piece of rice paper, some of your favorite sides, and begin creating your meal.  Salad was also available to wrap your meat into.

And in Korea, the night always ends with soup.  Since you’re already so full, the soup just washes everything down, so I’m told.

For my first time, I was a bit overwhelmed by all the options, and not sure how the entire process worked out, but, by the end of the night, I was having so much fun creating different meals, and the overall experience.

A big thanks to Yellow Cow.  Pictured above is us (my SO and me with the owner of Yellow Cow.)  She is an amazing hostess that takes great pride in her restaurant and the authentic Korean BBQ experience.  All the recipes are her own used throughout the restaurant.

And also, they have me SOLD on Korean BBQ, and I can’t wait to do it again.
