Making YOURSELF look pretty on paper!

Posted by on October 13, 2011

I pulled out my resume tonight.  The one I scribbled together years ago.  The one I transformed months ago when I moved out here and needed to look for new jobs.  The one that needed an update.  The one that I had to revamp to really show the skills I have when working.

I revamped it a little, but I find it so hard to sell myself when I don’t have the job experience to back me up.  What does that mean? I’m looking for a career change.  I’ve hit a point where I don’t want to work retail anymore.  I’ve done it for years, and it’s left me unhappy.  I recognize I have a skill in writing, a passion for it, and a desire to do it.

The thing is I have a lot of skills that employers are looking for.  I have a strong work ethic, a desire to succeed, I am a fast learner, I have the computer skills, and I am honest.  I am extremely loyal, kind, and customer service oriented.  I have an amazing memory, am rarely late, and invoke passion and desire into the jobs that I do.  I am motivated and driven to succeed.  Should be easy, right?

If that were the case I don’t think I’d be here sitting here thinking about the headache I’ve given myself by looking at my resume.  There is nothing more downgrading then going through a job search.  You look through all these jobs, and the skills they’re looking for.  First, you say, I don’t have those skills, then you start thinking about it and realize, YES I DO, and then you think harder, “how can I show that?”

Or you get into the jobs where you think you are so under qualified, but at the same time, you realize it’s your dream job! I have to say it is not easy going through a career change, yet so many people do it.  I really want to know how they landed their jobs, how they sold themselves.

So, if you’re reading this and your company is hiring, perhaps I’m the perfect candidate, what do you think? =)
