Travel and Adventure: It’s a Lifestyle

Disclosure: I covered the 2014 Travel and Adventure Show at the Santa Clara Convention Center. All opinions are my own.

I truly believe that “travel and adventure” are a lifestyle choice.  Some people are born to cook.  Some people are born to play sports. Some people are born to have a successful career, and some are born for travel and adventure.  I like to believe I am the latter.

My days of travel started at a young age, around age 7 when I was taken to Walt Disney World for the very first time.  My eyes opened wide at the possibilities of travel.  They continued to expand at 17 when I flew to Australia and New Zealand for 3 weeks of discovery and experiencing an entirely new culture.  And just a few years ago, an entirely new world opened up when I got brave enough to move across the country.

Bay Area Travel and Adventure Show

Needless to say, travel and adventure come hand and hand, and this is exactly why I believe it’s a lifestyle choice.  Last weekend, I drove myself down to the Santa Clara Convention Center to take part in the Bay Area Travel and Adventure Show.  Since new to the Bay Area I thought it’d be a great time to teach myself about Northern California and the surrounding regions along with put a bit of a travel bug into my ear.

Fresno Zoo

I started my morning off by focusing on the different California Region booths surrounding the show.  I am continuing to teach myself about the California area and soon made a list of places I want to visit in my near future: Mt. Diablo, Sacramento, Gold Country, Paso Robles, Pismo Beach, Half Moon Bay, Mendocino County and many more places.

I stopped to chat with the Fresno Zoo.  He’s there holding a Red Tail Boa Constrictor.  This picture was as close as I could get.  They also had other reptiles they were showing throughout the day.

And then I decided to get adventurous and try a few things:

Rock Wall

I’d always wanted to try climbing a rock wall.  And since the opportunity was there I thought I’d try it.  Yes, I am barefoot.  I was doing good until about halfway up when I looked down and the heights started to get to me.  It definitely gets tougher the higher you get up.  Some of the rocks become farther apart then to get down, you grab above you and the rope will carry you down.  An interesting experience, and now I can say I’ve done it.

Another thing I’d always wanted to try were also the Segways.  Lucky for me, they had set up a course along the show for people to try it out thanks to Santa Cruz Segway Tours.  What did I learn?  That for me, I wasn’t very good at operating one.  I couldn’t tilt my body forward all that well so needless to say, Segway was not for me, but I watched how easily so many others picked it up.

Then I was off to learn a bit:

lee foster

First from Lee Foster, the author of many popular books about Northern California.  This presentation’s focus was on Northern California, and he took us on a photographic journey of places to see and visit in Northern California.  Needless to say, he gave me inspiration to get out and begin exploring and made my Northern California list a bit longer.

I also sat in on a presentation with Joe Dias from Afar Magazine as he talked about his passion for travel and how his business began.  And if you haven’t heard of Afar Experiences, you should really look into it.  They make traveling even better through close encounter experiences.  Samantha Brown and Rick Steves were also present at the show offering their wisdom to the crowd and signing books afterwards.

And soon, I found my traveling bug, and began to travel after the show and landed in some place new:

boardwalk

The Santa Cruz Boardwalk

Until next year Adventure Expo.  They will be in the Los Angeles area February 8th and 9th, be sure to check to it out.  A good place to learn about regional destinations or to book a trip to somewhere far and make that dream vacation a reality along with tons of chances to win a getaway yourself.

Rosenblum Cellars 1st Annual Wine Club Dinner!

Disclosure: I was invited out to Rosenblum Cellars to partake in the first annual Rosenblum Wine Club Dinner.  All opinions are my own.

About a month ago I was invited out to Rosenblum Cellars new tasting room in Healdsburg, CA and had a great time learning cooking tips for Chef Joey Altman.

This time around, I was invited down to Alameda where it all began for Rosenblum Cellars.  This tasting room has been around for 35 years, and for that night, they brought together something special to thank their loyal wine club following. Rosenblum Cellars opened their doors for their 1st annual Winemaker’s dinner.

In Winemaker John Kane’s own words, “Passion for me is “a sense of happiness” — what makes you feel good about what you do every day. All the contributing factors of making wine is what I love: spending time in vineyards, working in the winery getting dirty, creating partnerships with growers or standing behind a table pouring Rosenblum wine and watching peoples face light up and say “WOW, that’s killer!” This is what gets me out of bed every day. I am proud to carry the Rosenblum torch, keep the tradition of urban winemaking alive, and make great wines.”

Rosenblum Winemakers Dinner

And for their first event, everyone walked out having a good time.  The evening started out with complimentary tastings of the new Great American Wine Company.  Guests were offered to try the chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon and red blends.  A portion of sales is donated towards military charities.  Hors d’oeuvres were also passed around.  Appetizers included: Roast Tenderloin, Crab Cakes, and Endive Spears.

Then guests were asked to be seated as the first course began to be served.  The first course included a Macha and Wild Greens salad with house made vinaigrette, toasted almonds, and honey crisp apples:

Soon, the main course was served.  Guests had the option of three different entrees:

*Liberty duck breast with creamed Yukon potatoes and broccoli raab

Roasted Duck

*Osso bucco with soft herbed polenta and prosciutto wrapped grilled asparagus

*Wild seasonal mushroom risotto with frilled seasonal squash

Mushroom Risotto

During the main course, one person from each table was chosen to pick out a bottle of wine for their table.  Our bottle:

Was the 2010 Winemaker Selection Zinfandel.  This bottle is only available to wine club members of Rosenblum Cellars.

Before dessert, Rosenblum Cellars winemaker, “John Kane,” said a few words thanking the loyal club members for being there that evening and for their loyal patronage.

A dessert buffet was soon served filled with tarts and pastries while the band began to play, and Rosenblum Cellar club members hit the dance floor.  For the first winemakers dinner, it was a complete success.

Rosenblum Cellars also announced their “Ambassador Club” program for those that have become wine club members for 5 years or more which will include even more perks on top of the current wine club benefits, and each guest walked away with a little gift from Rosenblum which included wine glass pens and a beautiful Wine Opener.

blogathonwinter_thumb

This weekend, when I’m around, I’m going to work on a few things that include:

Partaking in a few mini challenges such as learning how to increase facebook interaction, improving page rank, 15 Ways to Get new Blog Traffic, and Increasing my Instagram Following.

Along with these, I will complete my articles for next week along with creating a editorial calendar for the year ahead.  I think these are pretty big goals especially the Editorial Calendar.

In the end, this year’s its about getting ahead, staying ahead, and making a plan including laying out more goals for the year ahead.

What will you be working on this weekend?
