Thanksgiving Truth

I struggle with Thanksgiving.  Why?  The story we hear in school is that it was the time the Europeans and the Indians embraced each other, sat down, and had a meal together.

The premise sounds nice, but reality is: The American Indians and the masacre that followed was one of the biggest to happen in history.  So many men and women died over land, our land that we walk freely on today.

It is our history.  The Thanksgiving truth.  So yes, we look at Thanksgiving is a holiday, a happy time, but I can not pass by a Thanksgiving without thinking about the history of our country, and what actually happened on our land many moons ago.

I do look to November as a time to reflect on my life, where I ended up, and the many blessings that have come to me, but at the same time, I must remember those that have gone before me.

The Indians, beautiful people at heart, full of spirit, full of life, and full of ideas if you truly listen.  They are beautiful people, with a beautiful culture to suit.   May they always be remembered!

Thanksgiving Monday

All week I am going to talk about Thanksgiving, each day, each theme will incorporate the Thanksgiving blessings into it.  Since today is Photograph Monday, what better way to incorporate Thanksgiving than sharing pictures of some of my favorite foods during this scrumptious holiday.

Stuffing: My absolute favorite side dish during Thanksgiving.  For me, I have yet to meet a stuffing I do not like or enjoy.  It’s hard for me to believe there are others out there that actually don’t like stuffing at all, but I must keep an open mind and recognize it’s an acquired taste, and it’s one I could eat for days before getting tired of it.

Although this Stuffing looks interesting to me, made with leeks and chards.  I bet it still tastes delicious!

Cranberries are another long time favorite of mine.  As a kid I would watch as the cranberries got passed along the table, and how there were always leftovers for them, but whenever it got to me, I dished those cranberries up on my plate, and go for seconds or thirds.  For whatever reason, I could not get enough of them.  Over the years I’ve grown to have a taste for the homemade cranberries, but my all time favorite is still the jellied cranberries out of the can.  Nothing can replace the flavor or feel of the jellied cranberries.  Each year I make sure to buy an extra can just for me to add to a special meal prior to Thanksgiving.

And of course, when it comes to dessert, I must have my pumpkin pie!  My craving for pumpkin pie starts at the end of September and continues all the way through Thanksgiving.  Each time I go to the store I spend some time in the bakery looking over all the pumpkin pies, and of course, caving in and buying one.  This is my one fall must have every year.  This craving will not be going away anytime soon!

I love the food that comes out for Thanksgiving, and the older I get, as I learn new recipes and new foods to try, I’m learning to love this holiday even more.  As of recent, I learned my new found love of Sweet Potatoes.  I can’t do yams with marshmallows, but from now on, my sweet potatoes will be roasted and I love every bite of them.  One method of cooking, so simple, and my entire taste of a food has been changed.  The simple things in life can often times bring you the most joy!

The Rain Came Today.

Rain is so infrequent in Los Angeles, granted, during the winter months, rain is more frequent, and is greatly appreciated when it does come.

The rain came today.

I like when it does, it slows everything down around us.  It gives a new look at the life surrounding you, and the calmness sets in.

A week out before Thanksgiving.  The grocery stores are crazy busy, everyone’s getting in their last minute shopping in.  I’m finally getting to try that new Sweet Potato recipe I learned about from Simple Gourmet.

But, on this day, I feel as if it’s okay to be a bit lazy, that it’s okay to take things at a slower pace, and that it’s okay to think about the life around you and appreciate the simple things.

This is my list of the simple things in life I love:

*The day the rain comes

*Vibrant colors of flowers, and their smells

*A child playing in the park, or chasing butterflies

*Clementines when they come out in season!

*Learning how to cook something new, trying a new recipe for the first time!

*The cats laying next to me taking their “cat naps”

*Living near the Ocean

*Knowing in a month I’ll be visiting home

*and the loved ones in my life.

There are so many things to appreciate about life, I hope you take the time to think of your list, and perhaps share it with me below =)

Happy Rainy Sunday to those in SoCal.  For everyone else, Happy Sunday!
