Art, Art, Art…

Posted by on January 17, 2012

I am an art lover.  I have a deep appreciation for artists and anyone with talent in an artistic way.  The last few months I have gotten the opportunity to interview a few artists around town.  Hearing their stories are always inspiring.

One of the questions I would always ask would be this: “What advice would you give to a beginning artist.”  I’d always tell them that I wanted to learn how to paint, but always got so overwhelmed by the blank canvas in front of me.  Their response was always this: just put something on the canvas and go from there.

I’m just not sure if that would work for me.  I am a planner.  I always have been in my life.  And it’s no exception when it comes to art either.  I have to have an idea as to what I want to create before I can even attempt to try it out.

I need to let that go.

Around the holidays, I went to Michael’s and looked around all the art supplies for inspiration.  I stopped around the mosaic tiles.  I realized then that I always had a passion for mosaic pieces, and I was curious to how it would turn out, how I would do.  The next thing I know I’m buying some tiles and a picture frame.  The next week I put it all together, and I was pretty impressed with how easy it was.  I realized I could do this kind of art.

I then realized that I have always loved working on collages, etc.  And by speaking with other artists I knew if I were to become any artist at all, it would be a mixed media artist.  One that would grab pieces from around the room and encompass them into an art piece.  One that loves layered pieces of art over non layered.  One that had an appreciation for contemporary more than anything.

One of the other things I love about Los Angeles are the art walks that always happen around town.  1st Thursday’s in San Pedro to the Downtown Art Walk that happens the Second Thursday of the month to the Venice Art Walk which happens the 3rd Thursday of the month.  They’re an addiction for me!

The sad part is that I couldn’t name too many artists by name, but I have a huge appreciation for the talent and the art I walk by.

What kind of pieces of art do you have an appreciation for?  Are there certain kind of art you prefer over others?
