Travelers: Are you ready for the Government shutdown?

Even as travelers, without even thinking about it, the government shutdown could truly affect us.  With hundreds of national parks closing down from the Lincoln Memorial to The Grand Canyon to The Statue of Liberty to the Washington Monument.

Hotels.com has come up with some tips to make your travel plans a little easier:

Refunds:

Travelers who booked pre-arranged itineraries with a tour company within a national park will be given alternative options, however, refunds likely won’t be possible.  Independent travelers are not entitled to refunds due to park closures unless that accommodation is within a park and can not be reached.

Passports:

For those looking to travel outside the country in the immediate future and are in need of a new or renewed passport: Passports are being issued during the shutdown, but travelers are cautioned to call ahead to the passport office that will be processing their paperwork to ensure it is not located in a federal building that be closed as a result of the furlough.

Flying:

While the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) did furlough over 15,000 employees, “essential” workers such as air traffic controllers, equipment maintenance personnel and safety inspectors are still working to maintain air travel safety. If the furlough extends longer than a few days, the FAA says they will incrementally begin to recall specific employees back to work to meet continuing safety needs.

Opportunities:

While properties INSIDE national parks are currently unreachable, many properties just outside or within a few miles of these site are currently offering steep discounts in rates to combat the affects of the shutdown on tourism in their area. Despite closed attraction, there is still much to do in many of these areas and breaking deals for the perfect place to experience them can be found in real-time on the Hotels.com deal page.

Exploring Downtown Healdsburg!

Hey guys! Remember me?

Well, I’ve been in Northern California for about a week now, and each day we’ve been exploring a different area of my new home in wine country.  Last week we took a day to explore around Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Sonoma, Fairfield, and over the weekend we even took a trek to Downtown Healdsburg.

Napa Valley

Napa Valley

Downtown Healdsburg is a neat little area with little shops, restaurants and tasting rooms around a square.  If you’ve ever been to the Sonoma square, it has a very similar feel to it.  I had yet to do any tastings or stop off at some wineries, so Healdsburg was calling my name.

Downtown Healdsburg

And that’s what we did.  We stopped into two different tasting rooms while there.  The first being the Stephen and Walker tasting room.  The owner, Nancy Walker, is truly an artist when it comes to creating the flavors of her wine, and throughout the tasting you can really tell.  From Sauvignon Blancs to Pinot Noirs to Zinfandel’s and the most surprising to me, the Botrytis Chardonnay.  This was the first Chardonnay I tasted that honestly didn’t taste like a chardonnay.  They call it “Liquid sunshine in a bottle,” and that’s the surprising taste you get when you try it.

Stephen and Walker Tasting Room

The tasting at Stephen and Walker cost 10 dollars and included 6 tastings.  Also, if you purchased a bottle of wine, they waived the tasting fee.  The next tasting room we stopped into was Windsor Winery.  They had a white flight to choose from, one other flight, and then the sweeter side flight.  Guess which one I decided to try out?

Windsor Winery

You guessed it.  For just 7 dollars I choose the “Sweeter Side” flight which included a tasting of a Riesling, Moscato, Ice Wine, and a Gewurtzraminer.  They also waived the tasting fee if you purchased a bottle of wine.  Needless to say, the ice wine came home with me.

So, you could say my first day of wine tasting was a complete success.  Cheers!

A toast to you!
