My First Experience at a Spanish Tapas Restaurant: Mundaka!

This past weekend I went on a beautiful weekend getaway to Carmel by the Sea in California.  This quaint town, which began as an artist colony, is surrounded by 1 or 2 story buildings all with wooden signs hanging from them, and of course, no street addresses around.

Of all places to get away to, this is the place, with no addresses no one can find you right?

On Friday evening reservations were made for me at “Mundaka,” a spanish tapas restaurant right in town.  This being my first experience with spanish tapas I had no idea what to expect.

They sat me at a nice two person table in the corner.  These tables would make for a great date night.  They also have a table underneath the stairs with a curtain, and when they come to serve your food they will knock before entering.

Movies are shown on one of the walls within the restaurant and on Friday evenings, this place is extremely popular making for a fun ambiance within the restaurant.  BUT, it truly comes down to the servers making your experience even better.

Whether it’s your first time enjoying Spanish Tapas, or, like the gentlemen sitting next to me, who resided in Spain, the servers will make your experience great.

What exactly are Spanish Tapas?

The word “tapas” is derived from the Spanish verb tapar, “to cover”. (Wikipedia.)  However, tapas are referred to as appetizers or snacks.  Tapas are there to encourage conversation over a meal where your focus isn’t so much on the food, but on others around you.

With the Tapas being bite size, they are perfect for sharing, but some meals are a little harder to do just that:

Mini Lamb Burger

Such as the “Mini” lamb burger that comes out with truffle fries.  The fries can easily be shared, but the mini burger is just that, really mini, and as the server said to me, “isn’t that just the cutest little burger ever?”

Other food to try:

Tortilla Tapas

Start out with one of the traditional plates such as the “Tortilla” made of Potatoes, Onion, Egg and Sea Salt.  Goes down smooth with a nice glass of Red Sangria, one of the most authentic Sangrias I’ve had.

That evening I also tried the Fried Garbanzos being that I’m such a huge fan of garbanzos and hummus:

A few things I learned that evening during my first “Tapas” experience:

1) To order just a few plates at a time.

Try out those dishes, enjoy, converse, enjoy the company around you then order something else off the menu.

2) Red Sangria is really good if done right, and Mundaka has it done right.

3) The Titles of the Menu headings were definitely in Spanish, so although I didn’t always know what I was ordering, I let go for the evening, and just chose what looked good to me, and let me tell you, that’s the best way to do it!

4) Tapas Restaurants really bring out the community.  Meaning, it was okay to converse with your neighbors, ask questions to the servers and have a fun time.

5) and last but not least: Mundaka was a GREAT place for my first Spanish Tapas experience.

And one last thing: Don’t forget to order dessert.  Trust me: it’s excellent!  No photos for that as it was too dark, and I gobbled it up too quick.

Wine Feature: Dr. Konstantin Frank


Disclosure: I received a bottle for review purposes during a Virtual Wine Tasting that concentrated on the Finger Lakes Wine Region.  All opinions are my own.

A few weeks ago I partook in an online virtual wine tasting that gave me a glimpse into the Finger Lakes Wine Region.  This region is well known for its Rieslings, Ice Wines and Gewurtztraminer wines, and this was my first time trying this region.

Needless to say, I was beyond excited, but what I was really looking forward to that evening was trying out a few Gewurtztraminer wines.  A varietal I’ve heard of, but hadn’t tried yet.

But, there was one true standout from all the wines I tried that evening and it came from Dr. Konstantin Frank Wine Cellars.  They definitely have been reward winning within the New York Wine Region since 1962.

Dr. Konstantin Frank really changed the course of the Finger Lakes Wine Region by introducing the “Vinifera Revolution.”  Because of his knowledge and determination to making really good wine, he has helped to put the New York wine region on the map.

And, it really stood out when I tried the Gewurtztraminer.  Sweet aromas of orange blossoms, citrus and banana making for a wonderful blend.  Since trying out this wine I have been courageous with trying out Gewurtztraminer varietals, however, this one from Dr. Konstantin Frank was the real winner, and has become a new favorite wine.

A Gewurtztraminer Wine is great to drink on a hot summer day, and blends well with turkey, pork, or rich Asian and Indian Foods.  Have you tried a Gewurtztraminer before?  What are your thoughts?

The Trek to Big Sur!


Disclosure: I was invited out to experience all that Monterey has to offer.  I was shown places, lodging, and eateries throughout Monterey.  Those experiences have inspired this story.

One of the prettiest treks I’ve ever taken is driving along the coastline from Monterey to Big Sur.  From being able to pull off at various points throughout the trek it’s made for some truly beautiful shots.

Here’s a few ideas on what to do as you plan your trek from Monterey to Big Sur:

Starting Point:  Point Lobos State Reserve:

Throughout the reserve there are various hikes you can take.  The key is to park off of Highway 1 then hike into the reserve.  Parking is free that way. You can pull into the parking lot for a payment fee.

The reserve is a great area to take in beautiful wildflowers, birds, or watching the action happening in the surrounding ocean and you decide the kind of hike that you want to endure.

After spending the morning on a hike head over to Point Sur Lighthouse.  Be sure to reserve a tour ahead of time, they do fill up.

All tours are led by volunteers.  Tours fall along a paved road less than a mile distance with a rise in elevation of 360 feet and two stairways so be away of that.

But, the Point Sur Lighthouse is a truly neat experience to see in person and one of the best views around once you reach the top.

After your hike and tour, continue spending the rest of the day stopping at various locations along Highway 1 to take in the beautiful coastline and picture opportunities:

Including the famous Bixby Bridge which is one of the most photographic bridges within California, besides, the Golden Gate, of course.

See what I mean about that gorgeous coastline?  And, there are many other photographic opportunities off Highway 1 on your way to Big Sur.

Once in Big Sur be sure to grab lunch or dinner at Big Sur Roadhouse.  They’re also open for breakfast beginning at 7:30am.

This restaurant was a huge favorite amongst our group and I honestly can’t wait to go back.  From Grits to Sandwiches to delicious salads and more to choose from.

Once you’re in Big Sur it’s then time to decide if you will be camping for the evening, or looking for more luxurious surroundings.  If you’re looking for the latter you may just want to check out the rooms and cabins at Glen Oaks Big Sur:

Rooms offering a bit of luxury amongst the beauty surrounding Big Sur.  Favorites amongst guests happen to be the cottages.  Be sure to reserve your rooms in advance as they do fill up especially during the summer months.
