The Happy Egg Company! #neweggintown

There’s a #neweggintown!  The Happy Egg Co. originally came to be in the UK but has officially landed on US soil.  What makes the Happy Egg Co. unique is the fact that they are completely FREE RANGE eggs?

What does that all mean?

Sitting down with the informative Happy Egg Co chicken farmer Cyd Symanski, she explained to me how FREE RANGE works.  The Happy Egg Co. has 3 farms located in Arkansas.  These farms are roughly 4 acres.  Around 9am to 10:30am, the chickens lay their eggs in their large protective barn where they stay over night to roost within their favorite nesting box then around 10:30am, the doors of the barn open, and the hens have a choice: to either stay inside, or run amok outside.

(a model of what the 4 acre farm looks like where the hens roam free and happy!)

What I found out is that hens have very distinct personalities.  There are the ones who are waiting for that door to open, and as soon as they do run out into the field.  There are those that do go outside but don’t wander off too far from the barn, and then there are the hens who never have the desire to leave the barn at all, but the choice, is made by them.

Then around 4pm, the chickens make their way back to the barn where they will eat then find their place to roost at night.  Therefore having the freedom of the outdoors allows them to be happy and healthy.

Last Thursday evening, I was invited out to Grub Restaurant, former Top Chef Contestant Betty Fraser’s co-founded restaurant with Denise DeCarlo (also know as the Grub Gals) for an evening of appetizers made straight from the Happy Eggs themselves.  The Grub Restaurant is an adorable cafe located in West Hollywood that offers brunch offerings, and dinner options.  That evening they served up: deviled eggs, an amazing creme brulee, meyer lemon curd pavloka, a souffle, and a huevos diablo salad.  In the offerings they served you could tell their passion was completely in it.

Deviled Eggs

Their very own mascot, “Frida” also made an appearance that evening, and even did the Happy Hen dance for us.

The Happy Egg Co. Eggs can be found in Ralph’s, and soon to be Fresh n’ Easy stores along with specialty stores from Santa Barbara to San Diego.  The MSRP is 4.99 a package.

Within the next 5 years they are truly hoping to expand across the US.

Disclosure: I was invited out for an evening out with the Happy Egg Co.  I love the premise of this company, and hope to bring awareness of Free Range Eggs to others.

Why do my Photos Come out Blurry?

This post was inspired by a search term that ended up on my blog last week.  “Why do my photos come out blurry?”

So I thought I’d take the time to answer this question:

1) Lighting

2) Depth of Field

3) Camera Shake

4) Movement of Subject

5) Out of Focus

So lets go further in explaining how these factors affect your photos.

Lighting:

Have you ever taken a photo indoors or during the night that came back blurry?  Most likely the reason is because your shutter speed and ISO was far too low for the camera to capture the image.  Night photography is one of the trickiest shots to get, and along with indoor photography with artificial lighting.

(My ISO was too low for this image so the shot came out blurry!)

Most shots taken indoors or at night need to have a shutter speed of at least 1/60.  In a lot of the nicer digital cameras, to help your shots come out, you just have to up the ISO so the shot can be captured.  Otherwise, putting the camera on a tripod can also help tremendously.

I upped the ISO, and lo and behold, the shot came out clear

Depth of Field:

The depth of field is when you take a picture of an image.  Either the subject will be in focus and the background is out of focus, or else the background will be focus, and the subject will be out of focus.  The small the depth of field, the more the background becomes blurred out.

So if you have a subject that fits in the majority of your shot, depending on how small your depth of field is, the shot may come back blurry.

The shot is really in focus in front, but the back and the sides are all blurred out.  This is a small depth of field.   In some photos, such as the one above, it really brings out the shot.

Camera Shake:

Cameras are happiest when a photo is taken without them being touched. For the most part, during the day, cameras can handle the littlest of movements and the pictures come out fine.  It’s at night and indoors, when cameras need as little movement as possible.  Cameras work a lot harder in these situations with the processors and the shutter.  So the tiniest of movements can really throw a photo off.

At night, it is so important to have a tripod.  The tripod will take away that camera shake.  A lot of professional photographers also carry a remote control for their camera in which they can take the picture from afar to create that quality image their looking for.

Movement of Camera! (camera shake!)

A lot of cameras also have self timers on them, in which you can utilize so your fingers aren’t moving the cameras at all when you take a photo at night.

This photo has less camera shake, but it’s still not perfect because I was utilize the camera with a high iso, without a tripod, so it’s still iffy, but upping the iso and keeping the camera steady did help.

Movement of Subject:

Have you ever taken a photo and your subject has moved?  While that shutter is open, if there’s any movement, that movement is seen in the photo, and your shot will come back blurry.

Animals are tough creatures to capture 😉

Out of Focus:

And sometimes when we take a photo it may be out of focus, and those times, the photos will come back blurry.  An example I have of this is with my DSLR, if I don’t hold the button down all the way, the camera will automatically refocus because I have it on auto focus, and during this process, it sometimes goes out of focus.  Frustrating! Also, in manual focus settings, if you’re settings aren’t where they need to be, the photo will be out of focus, and come back blurry.

Part of it is knowing your camera, understanding the settings, and knowing what you’re capturing, the lighting environment around you, etc.

Go out, capture, and have fun!

Going Caffeine Free!

Around the end of September I was struggling with the idea of me going caffeine free.  I had tried it in the past, but I’d always go back to it.  It was the easy method.  It was out of convenience.

However, the past few months I was really noticing how caffeine was affecting me.  It was keeping me up at night.  I’m a night owl, but the caffeine did not help in the process.  Nights when I was tired but had caffeine in my system I’d stay up until 1 or 2am.  Having to wake up the next morning for work was always a battle.  I knew I had to stop this bad habit.

But also, I knew how drinking soda with caffeine in it was really beginning to affect my health.  Drinking a certain kind of soda was affecting the ulcer I had gained in my body, and there were some pretty rough nights.  Since I cut that one soda out of my system the ulcers have stopped acting up.

So, as of October 1st, I decided to start my caffeine cleanse.  And this time around, I was quitting cold turkey.  I’ve learned, going cold turkey, is the only way to get it completely out of my system.  When I announced this to the world a lot of people came to me in support saying “you can do it.”  “I did that and it was the best thing ever.”

And that’s when I went to ACTIVATE Drinking Water.  I asked them if they would help sponsor me in this process, so they sent me a few samples over of their water:

They sent me over Grape, Orange, Exotic Berry, Lemon Lime, and Fruit Punch.  What’s great about Activate is that in the top part there are vitamins, which are kept separate from the water.  When you’re ready to drink your water, by turning the cap left those vitamins will release into the water.  You then shake up the bottle, then open up and enjoy your beverage.

It’s refreshing.  The hardest part for me when giving up soda and caffeine is I miss the flavor.  Drinking straight water doesn’t have that flavor to me, so I grow bored FAST and EASY.  Activate helps take that away from me.

But the best part of drinking Activate with their vitamins being added in is that I honestly noticed a boost of energy in my system afterwards.  And this energy that was coming was completely healthy for me.

The first time I experienced Activate the hardest part for me was figuring out how to open the bottle, but once someone explained it to me, it’s been a pretty easy process.  To release the vitamins you turn left, to open the bottle of water you turn right.

Have you tried Activate, and what are your thoughts?

Right now, I’m more than halfway through my Caffeine Free Cleanse.  This even included a trip to Las Vegas where I had little sleep in the process.  Although this week was pretty brutal to get through as I was lacking energy and feeling very drained I stayed true to my cleanse.  I have my good days and my bad, but I’ve already noticed a difference in my body, and that difference is enough to keep me going.

And the best part of all of this is that I’m beginning to drink more water, another huge reason why I wanted to do this.

Disclosure: ACTIVATE Water provided me with Samples of their products to try out as I underwent my Caffeine Free cleanse.  I have purchased bottles on my own during this process, and would recommend their drinks to anyone.
