Mardi Gras Celebrations Beyond New Orleans!

New Orleans, the place to be every Mardi Gras, and celebrations have already been happening throughout this iconic city, but, for those of us that might not be able to get there, a few other cities that go all out for Mardi Gras:

San Diego:

For those of us in California, the easiest trek is heading down to San Diego where the Fat Tuesday celebrations are gaining in popularity as the Gaslamp Quarter is overtaken by festivities from 5pm to Midnight on Tuesday, February 17th.  40 Dollars General Admission at the Door. VIP Tickets: 120 Dollars at the Door.

Entertainment of over 20 performers are taking place this Tuesday night including a DJ set by Snoopadelic! And of course, it’s not Fat Tuesday without a parade to boot… as they like to introduce it: The Gaslamp Quarter Mardi Gras parade is back! At the top of 5th Avenue and E Street the Mardi Gras parade begins to erupt in sound and visual splendor lead by multiple music groups, roving performers, the Grand Marshall and extravagant floats that will consist of over a hundred people. The parade will roll at 9:00 PM to hype up the crowd for the floats and to tie in a traditional New Orleans parade performance staple.

Galveston Island, Texas:

Galveston, Texas Mardi Gras

Everything’s bigger in Texas, and of course, no surprise that there’s a fun Mardi Gras celebration happening there, as well.

Celebrations began Feburary 6th and will continue throughout Tuesday evening with entertainment, parades, and over 3 Million Beads being tossed out.

Tuesday Night Parade: 6:30pm: Mystic Krewe of Aquarius 19th Annual Fat Tuesday

One of the island’s most popular parades. In the final hours of Mardi Gras this special event will feature the 10 lighted Aquarius floats plus  entries from Knights of Momus, Krewe of Gambrinus, Krewe Babalu, Z Krewe, Krewe of Thalasar. Lighthouse Krewe and many others.

The parade will also feature 8 marching bands. Come and enjoy this great event.

Lake Charles, Louisiana:

New Orleans isn’t the only part of Louisiana that goes all out for Mardi Gras.  Welcome to Lake Charles!

The Lake Charles Mardi Gras celebration is unique in that it is the only place in Louisiana where the public is invited to see the costumes of the all the krewes in one place, at the Lake Charles Civic Center. Lake Charles is also home to The Imperial Calcasieu Museum, the largest Mardi Gras museum in the United States, which tells the global history of the celebration, along with the best recipes for King Cake and showcases 1,000 costumes.  Mardi Gras runs until February 17th in Lake Charles and regularly draws 150,000 people. ~Hotels.Com

The best part of this area is the genuine feel that comes with it, and an entire day dedicated just for children and families which was today (Sunday, February 15.) It’s been so fun following the photos today.

Mobile, Alabama:

Widely recognized as the birthplace of Mardi Gras in the United States, the bonne temps have been rolling in Mobile since 1703. These authentic celebrations revolve around mystic societies and exciting private social organizations. Today, nearly four dozen parades in less than two weeks celebrate that legacy. The events in Mobile began on February 1st and will continue until February 17th. ~Hotels.Com

Pensacola, Florida:

The annual Pensacola celebration is among the oldest in the United States, dating back to 1874. Parades are on the evening of February 13th (“Krewe of Lafitte”), February 14th in the afternoon (the ” Pensacola Grand Mardi Gras Parade “), and on Sunday the 15th (“Krewe of Wrecks”) on Pensacola Beach.

The parade has over 6,000 people participating in the parade and over 100,000 watching it happen.

St. Louis, Missouri:

And for your Midwesterners, have no fear, make the trek down to St. Louis for weeks of Mardi Gras festivities.

Celebrating 250 years since the French founded this city just upriver from N’awlins, St. Louis is home to the second biggest celebration in the United States. The Soulard district is ground zero for more than a month of activities, including a Taste of Soulard restaurant crawl on Feb. 7th and 8th. Pet parades on Feb. 8th crown the family friendly events and transmit the enthusiasm of this celebration to the new generation.

The celebration begins on Feb. 7 and goes until the 17th. The event sometimes attracts hundreds of thousands of revelers. Previous years saw crowds of 200,000–250,000 attendees.

After writing this, it only makes me realize how much I want to be partaking this Tuesday night. Do you have any Fat Tuesday traditions? Have you been to a Mardi Gras celebration before? Share below.

California Beach Town with a Small Town Feel: Cayucos

One of the best things about California is discovering those Gems that are hidden away, or others just don’t talk about as much. They’re everywhere, but for me, some of the best, lie right on the Central California Coast.

Cayucos.

This beauty of a beach town encompasses everything; The idyllic town of Cayucos is located half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco along California’s beautiful Central Coast. The term “Cayucos” comes from the Chumash Native American word for “canoe.” Cayucos is a throw back to the original, laid-back California beach towns with its relaxed vibe and Western influences. Time still moves a little slower in Cayucos.

It is one of those spots that welcome relaxation, allowing you to leave the city life behind you, and welcome the beach all around you.  From its small town charm comes lots of enjoyment. A beach that isn’t too crowded, but still feels like you’re getting away.

Annual festivals throughout the year include:

Stewardship Travel Month: (February 1-28): Every February is Stewardship Travel Month, and Cayucos offers a variety of opportunities for people to get involved through many Stewardship programs.  A complete list can be found here.

Mermaid March (March 1-31): Local Businesses will be displaying local Mermaid Art Installations throughout Cayucos during the month of March.

Sea Glass Festival (March 14-15): See the natural beauty of Sea Glass at this annual event that continues to grow throughout the years. Sea glass enthusiasts and craftspeople from around the world will converge in this quaint beach town every March to sell and showcase their sea glass creations, jewelry, keepsakes and treasures.

4th of July Celebration: (July 4th)

Enjoy Independence Day with your family Cayucos style! The streets of this charming beach town come alive with a hometown parade while sand sculptures cover the beach as a result of the annual sand sculpture competition, perfect for all ages! The grand finale comes with a spectacular show of fireworks, which are shot off the famous Cayucos pier.

For me, it’s a must visit list in 2015.  Have you been or will you be heading there this year?

A Few Things to Know About Wine and Chocolate Pairings!

winechocolate

Happy Valentine’s Day Weekend! Some of you may be beginning the celebrations this evening and carry on throughout the weekend, others of you may be partaking fully on Saturday (Yay for Valentine’s Day being on a Saturday!) or perhaps for some of you it may just be a nice, calm night at home.

No matter how you choose to celebrate, if you even celebrate at all, it’s hard to resist thinking Chocolate and Wine this time of the Year.

Within this post, I’m not going to give you specific wines to pair with your Chocolates, you know what wines you love, but I am going to give you a few things to think about before creating your own Wine and Chocolate Pairing at home.

1) It’s Meant to Be Explored!

First rule of thumb when it comes to Wine and Chocolate pairings? Just have fun.  Grab your favorite Chocolate Heart Box and go to town, but keep a few things in mind:

2) Try to Avoid Dry Style Wines

They just don’t pair that WELL with chocolate.  Chocolate can be rich, it can be fruity, it has a lot of flavor.  The key is in knowing your chocolate before picking out your wine.

3) Lighter Chocolates pair well with Lighter Style Wines, Heavy Chocolates pair well with more Heavy Style Wines.

If you keep this in the back of your mind, your wine and chocolate pairings will go a lot more smoothly.

4) Don’t Skimp on White Wines

When we think Chocolate, we instantly think of Red Wines.  Red Wine and Chocolate go hand and hand, nothing beats a fruity flavorful Zinfandel against a densely piece of chocolate, however, White wines will surprise you, and in how they change the flavor density of a piece of chocolate.

Think of a fun Moscato, this is actually a fun flavorful wine to pair with Chocolate especially when it comes to White Chocolate.  A nice match for each other.  And with Valentine’s Day, a fun sparkling is also a really good pairing.

But don’t forget about the flavor notes that may hit a lot of chocolates especially inside of your chocolate box.  Those citrus notes can be a nice pairing against flavor contrasts found within the wine.  A nice flavor of Orange mixed in with Chocolate would pair nicely with a citrus flavorful Sauvignon Blanc.

5) Bring Out the Port!

Ports aren’t called a dessert wine for nothing.  But, when it comes to a Port, the flavors are often rich, and heavier on the palette, so pairing with a wonderful dark chocolate is what I would recommend.  The richness of both of these will have your mouth begging for more.

6) A Nice Rose

Probably one of my favorite wines to pair with chocolate is an even tempered Rose.  Especially when it comes to Milk Chocolate.

The nice part about Wine and Chocolate pairings is that it can be shared with a loved one, or by yourself with your favorite box of chocolates.

Wishing you all a Happy Valentine’s Day Weekend!! Happy Pairing.
