Capturing those AMAZING Vacation Photos!

Summer’s right around the corner, and I’m thinking vacations, fun weekend getaways, and time at the beach and/or lake.  During those moments I tend to reflect on capturing the best vacation photos and now it’s time to share some tips:

1) Get that Postcard Shot!

You know the one.  Whether it’s the Golden Gate Bridge (pictured above) or perhaps the NYC Skyline, or The St. Louis Arch to capturing Disney, capture that postcard shot.

But, after it’s captured, put your mind to a test.  “How can I make this shot interesting?”  Look around you.  Are there things you can add as foreground or as silhoettes?

2) Think.

Seriously.  What is it about the place that you’re going to?  Are there any interesting characteristics about this place, if so, capture the essence of what those things are.

3) Then Look for the “Unique.”

With any photograph, we see life through the eyes of the photographer.  So, in that way, draw on things that stick out to you.  This is your way to tell your story in how you see the world.

For me, I am drawn to statues, to art figures, and overall, in composition of my photographs:

4) Capture the Environment Around You

Each place you visit has a certain feel to it.  The ambiance should be showcased in the photographs taken of the area, and through the photographs, others viewing it should be able to capture the essence of that place.

5) Don’t forget the FOOD!

Sometimes certain occasions when traveling relate to the food that is part of the occasion.  4th of July = Barbeques.  Birthdays = cake.  Mother’s Day = Brunch (often!), etc.  During these occasions make sure to capture the food that go with these moments.

Also, when traveling, certain areas may be known for a certain particular area of food more than others.  Chicago = Pizza and Hot Dogs.  Philadelphia = Cheese Steak.  Minneapolis = Juicy Lucy, etc.

6) The People.

Nothing’s better than a photograph of a person in their environment.  Whether you’re on the beach and you’re catching someone on a hammock reading a book, or perhaps at a park and encountering a bike rider, or in Washington DC and capturing someone waving an American Flag, those are the moments to keep an eye out for.

7) Capture the Moment

Often, as a photographer, we just have to keep our eyes open for that perfect moment.  From a distance you may see a bird flying your way.  You wait until that time to hit the shutter button.

Or, you’re at an outing and a person is doing something unique in the environment they’re in.  Pay attention to your surroundings and be ready for that “moment.”

8) Capture the Memory

In the end, when on vacation the most important part is capturing what is happening around you to take those memories home with you.  Capture the smiles, capture the spots you’ve visited, or even the people.  Those pictures last a lifetime.

Disclosure: This is not a sponsored post.  Just tips I wanted to share to make the most of your summer vacations.  Plus I just got back from a weekend getaway so was feeling inspired.

#AD: Marie Callender’s new Pie and Pasta Amore Menu!

My first experience with Marie Callender pies was when I was 16 years old.  It was the week before Thanksgiving, and pies were on sale, and man, were they on sale at Buy One Get One Free.   I soon learned about Marie Callender’s Frozen Entrees and Pot Pies too.

So when I moved to California one of the first things I noticed were the Marie Callender’s Restaurants, “They have restaurants?”  This was complete news to me.  So when the opportunity presented itself to try out their new menu, “Pie and Pasta Amore” I couldn’t resist.  Thank you Marie Callender’s for inviting me out to try the new menu for free.  A name I grew up on, and now a chance to try out their restaurant (granted, I have tried it before out of curiousity!)

Their Pie and Pasta Amore menu starts at 9.99 and up!  You get a pasta, chosen from 4 varieties: Baked Rigatoni with Caesar Salad, Shrimp Angel Hair Sorrento, Wild Mushroom Ravioli with Rosemary Chicken, and Chicken Pesto Alfredo with Caesar Salad.

If you are a vegetarian they will also accommodate for you by taking the chicken off.

However, lets be honest here, what is Marie Callender’s really known for?  Their pie, right?  So we can’t forget that.  All 8 of us ordered something different:

Pie

The first pie in the pic is their new “Lemon Cake Pie.”  I’ve heard great things about it, however,  I went with the Double Cream Blueberry.  I am a cream pie girl myself.

There’s still two other pies out there 😉 See what I mean?  Needless to say I will be heading back to Marie Callender’s again to take advantage of this deal, and of course, the pie.

But one of the best parts of the night was getting together with other bloggers just to chat and enjoy a night out in Riverside:

So, a big thank you to Marie Callender’s for having us out to try their new menu items!

#AD: Kings Hawaiian Awards #ProjectMahalo Winner!

Last week I was invited out to the headquarters of Kings Hawaiian where they were announcing their #ProjectMahalo Winner.

What is #ProjectMahalo?

20130501_115103

Directly from the King’s Hawaiian Website: King’s Hawaiian created Project Mahalo to say “thank you” to four nationally recognized charitable organizations that are dedicated to the principles of sharing, generosity and giving back. Project Mahalo invites friends of KING’S HAWAIIAN to show their support for the important work of these charities by going to www.ProjectMahalo.com to vote for the organization they believe best embodies The Hawaiian Way. The largest vote tally will determine which organization will receive a donation of $25,000. All of the organizations selected to participate in Project Mahalo will receive a minimum donation of $10,000. The donations will be announced on May 1, 2013.

Upon arrival to King’s Hawaiian they greeted us with Lei’s since May 1st in Hawaii also happens to be Lei Day.  We were then introduced to the four organizations:

Big Brothers Big Sisters:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of AmericaWhich is an organization that provides mentor matching and long term support to help kids facing adversity achieve success.

Family Caregiver Alliance:

supports and strengthens the work of families nationwide caring for loved ones with chronic disabling health conditions.

Meals on Wheels:

·         supports local Meals On Wheels programs that deliver nutritious meals to homebound seniors.

One Warm Coat:

·         shares the warmth by working to provide a warm coat, free of charge, to anyone in need.

The One Warm Coat organization really touched my heart because of being from Minnesota and knowing how important a coat is needed there.  So, please, if you have any old coats lying around, find an agency that works directly with this organization and drop them off.

CEO: Mark Taira thanked each of the organizations for being there and then invited his daughter Courtney Taira up to award the winner their 25,000 check:

A big congratulations goes out Meals on Wheels for their big check and being most like King’s Hawaiian and their Hawaiian way.

The other three organizations also received a generous donation of 10,000 dollars each.  The #ProjectMahalo started with 100 organizations then they were narrowed down to 30 before selection of the final four.

After the announcement they greeted us with a wonderful lunch and an opportunity to tour the King’s Hawaiian Bakery after:

And of course, me in the bakery trying out fresh bread right out of the oven:

And a Big Mahalo(means Thank You in Hawaii) for making a DREAM come true by having me out at the King’s Hawaiian headquarters.
