Exploring Old Town Sacramento! #VisitSacramento

Last weekend we took a weekend getaway to Sacramento! It was a good opportunity for us to explore the area a bit more, try out some of the Farm to Table Restaurants, and just have a fun time away from the stress of life.

Old-Sacramento

We ended our weekend trip with spending time along Old Sacramento!  This was MY FIRST TIME walking around Old Sacramento.  Old Town is right off the Sacramento River, and offers scenic views of the area, and also a fun establishment with Old Time Photos, Museums, Carriage Rides, all while paying tribute to the history of Sacramento.

A few things I learned:

It can GET CROWDED on the weekend!

Have a Plan, and alternatives if things get too crowded.

A great place to People Watch.

Stay for the Sunset!

Find a Place to Eat with over 50 Restaurants and Cafes in the area!

What we Did:

Explored the Railroad Museum

Railroad-Museum

This Museum pays homage to the history of the Railroad, particularly in California.  It also gives you the opportunity to explore different style railroads over the years by hopping on and off throughout the museum.  Your ticket includes in and out privileges throughout the day.

Took a Hornblower Cruise:

For 20 dollars per person, you could book yourself a Hornblower Cruise along the Sacramento River.   My other half and I saw this, and since it was a perfect weather day, we had to partake.  It was a relaxing journey throughout the trip, and we learned a few things about Sacramento we didn’t quite know before.

Our favorite part was going underneath the famed Tower Bridge, and also the I-Street Bridge.

Walked Around Old Town Sacramento

As we walked around Old Town Sacramento, we walked into Candy Shops, watch others get Old Time Photos, looked through antiques, grabbed some ice cream, and got ideas on things to do for future trips.

Enjoy The Tower Bridge at Sunset

But our favorite part of the day was at Sunset when we walked across the Tower Bridge, and captured Old Town from the other side:

Recommendations:

Spend some time on the Delta King.  You can even stay overnight!

Delta-King

The Delta King: A Floating Hotel on the Sacramento River.  Explore the different levels, enjoy a meal at their restaurant, or get a drink in the lounge. A favorite among those visiting Sacramento.

Enjoy a Carriage Ride:

Horse Carriage Rides take place around Old Town Sacramento. Carriage and wagon rides are offered throughout the year in Old Sacramento by private coach operators. Catch a ride on 2nd Street between J and K in front of the Wells Fargo Museum and Old Sacramento Visitors Center. Call ahead to make special arrangements.

Train Rides are also available from April 4-September 27.

Take in a Tour:

Underground Tours:

Operated by the Historic Old Sacramento Foundation. Tours run April through December.
Explore excavated foundations and enclosed pathways hidden since Sacramento raised its streets over a century ago.

Gold Rush Experience Tours:

Presented by the Historic Old Sacramento Foundation. Tours run October through December.
Learn the intriguing histories of the various Gold Rush era buildings throughout the Old Sacramento Historic District while being entertained with stories about the miners, prospectors, merchants and more!

Worth a Napa Stay: The Silverado Resort And Spa

This past December my beloved and I booked a romantic weekend getaway at the Silverado Resort & Spa. We included it with our nightly dinner excursion on the Napa Valley Wine Train.

Upon arrival, we pulled up to the Silverado, and literally realized it was a complete resort where maps were needed to help you locate your room, and all the amenities that are apart of the area.  We walked through the main building to check in, and take in the views of the resort. Of course, they were all decked out for the holidays.

If you love golfing, they have their own golf course attached to the Resort, where many golf lovers come for a day’s or even weeks outing.

They also have a luxurious Spa, where you can book massages, skin treatments, and more during your stay, or even to plan your day at the spa.

There are room sizes for all group outings, whether it’s a romantic escape for 2, or a complete family outing, there’s rooms to accommodate all needs.

We stayed in a small 2 person room, but it was perfect for the two of us: This is the Cottage Room Premium.

We also loved our little Patio area outside the room.  If it wasn’t a rainy weekend we would have enjoyed our morning out here.

Our Recommendation: Although we loved our 1 night stay at the Property we both felt that to truly enjoy the resort, and all that it has to offer, a long weekend, or even a FULL week stay is what this Resort deserves.  You will go home feeling completely rejuvenated.

We highly recommend staying here during your Napa Valley Travels.  Close to Downtown, along with the beginning of Silverado Trail.

We also recommend stopping into The Grill at Silverado on the weekends for their brunch.  A nice offering where you can easily pair your meal with a Mimosa, or coffee.  They also offer a full service lunch and dinner menu.

Where Your Winter Fruits and Vegetables Come From: A focus on Imperial Valley!

Disclosure: I was invited out to Imperial Valley and Coachella Valley for a Farm Tour with California Farm Water Coalition. Food and Room were provided.  All Opinions are my own.

Truthfully, before this trip, I never KNEW how farmers were allocated water, or how regulated they were when it comes to growing their food, but after this tour, I learned a bit more (there’s still so much more to learn!)

Farm-Water-Irrigation

Farm Water Irrigation in Progress: Lakeside Organic Farms

But one thing I truly took away from this TRIP was knowing where most of my Winter Fruits and Vegetables come from!  As California is a HUGE producer of fruits and vegetables, even some that are the main supplier (California produces almost all of the country’s almonds, apricots, dates, figs, kiwi fruit, nectarines, olives, pistachios, prunes, and walnuts.) -netstate.com.  They are also the majority grower for: It leads in the production of avocados, grapes, lemons, melons, peaches, plums, and strawberries. -netstate.com

We began our Farm Tour in Imperial Valley, which, really, brought us to Holtville, CA, the furthest South we could get in the State of California.  BUT, it is one of the Agricultural Valleys of the South that gives us our Winter Fruits and Vegetables, one of the few places in California that is able to provide year round vegetation and growing conditions.

Lakeside-Organic-Farms

One of my favorite parts of the tour: Looking out and seeing the different greens all lined together!

Starting off at Lakeside Organic Farms with Farmer Scott Howington.  There, he lead us through his farm fields where he grows over 47 different crops from Kale to Chard to Carrots to Cabbage to Lettuce to Celery to Fennel and more.

How-Celery-is-Grown

Celery Straight from the FARM

It was HERE where we could see all the crops growing, but ALSO see, how Farm Irrigation works: Starting off with the Canals.  Every Canal in the Imperial Valley has a name.  The Rosita Canal is what flows by Lakeside Organic Farms, and the canal they request their water from.  Every FARMER in California has a yearly water cap of a little over 5 ACRE Foots of Water (1 Acre Foot is approximately 325,000 Gallons of Water!) From the canal, the farmers have to call ahead (at least 3 days to request the water they need!) They are then told when it will be delivered and will be released into the canal.  They then have their own gate that opens into their Farm reservoir where the water will then be released into, and how they then irrigate the water from!

Rosita-Canal

Imperial Valley is regulated and controlled by the Imperial Valley Irrigation District who manages the water and energy for their area.  The majority of their water supplies comes from the All American Canal, from the Colorado River.  Over 3.1 Million Acre-Feeds Annually.

Imperial Valley supplies the majority of WATER to the Metropolitan Areas of Both San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles Counties.

Salton-Sea

Salton Sea

They are ALSO responsible for feeding water into the Salton Sea, a large size Water Mass that was created due to a levy break by one of the Irrigation Canals in the early 1900’s.  The SEA is 376.1 Square Miles, and the water that creates it comes from Imperial Valley’s agricultural runoff water.  If they do not provide water to Salton Sea, the sea will begin to recede, and will CREATE a huge Health Hazard to the AREA due to the Sulfur that lies below the Water.

After touring Lakeside Organic Farms, we were then taken over to Holtville’s Annual RibFest:

Holtville-Ribfest

An annual Community Event Fundraiser that helps the entire community the year after! EVERYONE comes out to this event.  The RIBS usually sell out by 11am, but there’s still Corn, Ice Cream and Beers to enjoy the rest of the day.

This was a GREAT way to see the Holtville Community in Action:

Star-Wars-Themed-Ribs

A few even created a Star Wars Themed Ribs Booth at the event.

After taking in the community vibe, we were then taken over to VegCool, the Produce Supplier and Manufacturing Hub of Imperial Valley.  This is where the Farmers bring their Produce to Cool it Down before shipping to their Suppliers and Area Grocery Stores. ALSO, where the produce boxes get packed with Ice: Think Broccoli, etc!

VegCool

Day 1 Was a GREAT Day of Exploring Imperial Valley.  Join Me in Part 2 in a couple of days as we look towards Coachella Valley and all THAT they do!
