Composing Your Shot!

Sometimes I get asked the questions of “how do you compose a shot?”  The truth is, my eyes just see the shot, and I work with what I see.

But, overtime, by watching other photographers I have learned a few other ways to make a shot look interesting.. and I’d like to share those ideas with you.

1) Look Up

Say you go to your park on a daily basis and you see the same scenery, but ask yourself, how many times have you looked up?  It changes the perspective completely.  This technique works great, especially if you’re walking on a street, just looking up can create different angles and perspectives for you.

2) Get up close and personal

Having a close shot of a detail of a picture can make for some awesome footage.  How many times have you seen a picture, and it turns out it was just one item, but because of how it was composed, it worked.

3) Whatever you’re focusing on in your shot, move that detail to the left or the right.

By doing this your eyes will avert to that detail in your shot.  Also, depending on where you place your focus will make or break the shot entirely.

4) Pay Attention to the background in your photograph

How many times have you taken a photo, and when you get it back you’re disappointed because there’s a garbage can in the background, or someone was walking by, or you see something you missed entirely.

Well, start thinking about your shot, and look for those background items before taking your shot.  Today, for example, I was at the park taking photos with some friends, and lo and behold, I noticed garbage cans in the background, or the sun, or someone walking by. I’d wait a little bit, or move myself a little to the left to take those background items out of the shot.  It made the shot work, whereas, if I left those items in, it’d be a different picture completely.

To me, the shot above would have worked a lot better if the car wasn’t driving by at that exact moment, but I didn’t screen my shot first, and this is what I came up with.  So, take that minute to scour your background.

5) Utilize Foreground

You know where I like to put this to use?  In sunsets.  Those trees, those branches around you, they help make a boring shot turn into something great.   So, look around you, what object would make for interesting detail, find a way to utilize it.

6) Declutter your Shot

Utilizing foreground can be a good thing, but if you utilize too much of it, it could make a shot not look so good.  So, try to keep things simple when composing your shots, and not have too much going on in your shot.

Too much was just happening in the shot above.. it took away from what was happening: the sunset.  😉  Even I make mistakes! lol

Anyways, hope you can put some of these tips to use.  Let me know how you did, and make sure to post some of your pictures for me on Minnesota Girl in LA’s facebook page!

I am NOT a Mother, but I am a consumer!

Ever since I found the blogging world, and have seen the influence that bloggers have on products, on social media, and on what’s up and coming, I am amazed… but then I think about how brands market to specific niches only, and it got me thinking.  Is marketing to just one area a good thing?

I am NOT a mother, but one thing I know is that I am, indeed, a consumer.  So, I wanted to write this list out (I’m not writing this to offend, I appreciate all the mother’s out there in the world!)

I am NOT a mother, but one thing I know, is that we are ALL consumers.

I am NOT a mother, but I do cook on a daily basis for me and my loved one, and we even need to think about our lunches that we bring to work.

I am NOT a mother, but I do enjoy going to movies.  Every weekend my partner and I usually hit one movie.

I am NOT a mother, but I do enjoy video games.  I have the WII, and as I grew up between my brother and I, we had all the latest nintendo products, playstations, and the latest gaming systems available.

I am NOT a mother, but I do enjoy going to amusement parks; especially with friends, or even on my own.

I am NOT a mother, but I drive my car everywhere.  On a given week, I put roughly 500 miles on my car.

I am NOT a mother, but I have a love for exploration.  Take me to the latest museum exhibit, take me to the latest restaurant opening, take me to the latest zoo, I will be there checking it out.

I am NOT a mother, but I have a love of travel.  I’ve traveled many places in my life, thus far, and I am looking to travel more.  California is a completely new arena to me with so much to see and do, and I want to do all of it 😉

I am NOT a mother, but I love snack foods (applesauce, fruit snacks, chips, yes please!)

I am NOT a mother, but I am a pet owner.  I love my CATS 😉

I am NOT a mother, but I have a wide network range that continues to grow on a daily basis.

I am NOT a mother, but brands have been apart of my life since the day I was born.

I am NOT a mother, but I have a deep love for wine.

I am NOT a mother, but I have a desire to buy a bicycle.

I am NOT a mother, but I am addicted to social media

I am NOT a mother, but I’m always looking for ways to spend my money 😉

I am NOT a mother, but one thing I know for sure, is that we’re all consumers!

Okay, that felt good to get it off my chest 😉 The truth is, we are all consumers, and each brand has different markets they’re trying to reach, but each market has a new way of looking at the product, and a different way to put the product to use.  In the end, we love our products, and love hearing of the new products that come out each year.

Rush Bowls Brings me Morning Energy and Cheer!

When I first found out about Rush Bowls, I couldn’t wait to try them.  What exactly are they?  Think frozen fruit, and granola, all in a wholesome, frozen bowl that easily thaws out for your pleasure.   They are a combination of different fruits and other healthy ingredients added with a topping of granola.

These bowls are perfect for moms on the go, busy women on the go, and even children on the go.  The best part is how nutrious they are for you.  How do you thaw them out?  There’s a variety of ways.  1) Thaw naturally.  Take out of the freezer, thaw out, and about 1 1/2 to 2 hours it’ll be ready to eat.  2) Microwave for about 20 to 25 seconds, blend, and away you go.  3) Take out of the freezer the night before.  With this strategy the hard part is remembering 😉

They come in 5 varieties which are:

Power Bowl~ blueberry, raspberry, banana, oats, whey or soy protein, fat-free frozen yogurt, vanilla soy or fat-free milk. topped with organic hemp granola & honey

Yoga Bowl~ mango, pineapple, banana, green tea, fat-free frozen yogurt, vanilla soy or fat-free milk. Topped with organic hemp granola & honey.

Oasis Bowl~ A pure blend of peach juice, coconut milk, pineapples, and mangos.

Acai Beach Bowl~acai, mango, banana, pure guava juice. Topped with organic hemp granola & honey.

Gluten Free Beach Bowl~100% pure guava juice, acai berries, mango, banana.  Packed with a crunchy gluten-free topping.

These bowls can be found in Whole Food Markets and they retail at about 4.99 each.  Right now they’re currently found in Colorado, Arizona, Southern California, Nevada, and Hawaii.

I had the opportunity to try all 5 of these varieties.  My absolute favorite was the Yoga Bowl, the blend of flavors in this combination just worked for me especially with the mango and pineapple (always my favorites!) A close second for me was the Oasis bowl!

I first ran across Rush Bowls at #expowest.  They were widely interactive on twitter, and when I ran across their booth their team walked me through all the varieties, and I got to sample each one.  I have to say they had one of the nicest teams around at the expo.  They were approachable, friendly, and informative of their products.

When thawing out the old fashioned way make sure to have a towel underneath the bowl because it can get a bit messy (trust me on this!) And like I said earlier taking them out the night before is a great idea as long as you remember to grab it on your way out in the morning.

These were convenient for me, as I am the type of person that wakes up, gets ready, and am out the door in a matter of minutes forgetting all about breakfast.  With these, I could take them with me, have a quick breakfast in my car before I got going for the day.  And the best part is, it’s the combination of all my favorites: fruit and granola.

Disclosure: Rush Bowls sent me a sample of all 5 varieties.  All opinions of this product are my own.

Rush Bowls was founded in Boulder, Colorado on “The Hill” nearby CU campus.  With hungry college students rushing to and from classes, and stopping by for their smoothies.  Rush eventually came out with their frozen grab and go bowls, which today, are now Rush Bowls which brings convenience to a whole new level.
