It’s my SITS Day, It’s my SITS Day!!

Hello Beautiful SITsahs!

My name is Jamie and I want to welcome ALL of you to my beautiful home, “Minnesota Girl in LA.”  Yes, you guessed it.  I am a Minnesota Girl at heart, born and raised until a little over a year and a half ago when I moved out to Los Angeles.  Like the title of my tagline?  As I drive along the freeways during the day I often wonder, “Oh No, What did I do?”

Me in my new Sunhat! yay

The truth is I’ve completely embraced LA and the beauty that surrounds me.  The Ocean, The Amazing Opportunities, and yes, even the People!

For those that don’t know, today is my featured SITS Day!  I’ve been looking forward to this day for a long, long time.  I’ve debated all day what I should write about to introduce all of you to my blog, yet, here I sit, blank.  😉

For those that don’t know The SITS Girls is a community of over 40,000 women bloggers who come together to comment and support one another through blogging.  There are a variety of discussion forums, opportunities for bloggers to get to know one another, and they host a wonderful Blogging Conference called “Bloggy Boot Camp” that goes all over the United States.  They are an incredible organization and community that I am so very happy to be apart of.

What is “Minnesota Girl in LA” all about?  Well, it’s my outlet to talk about all the things I love.  On Mondays I usually give tips on photography.  Although,  I am far from being a professional, I am an avid hobbyist, and like to share the knowledge I have learned throughout my journey.  Pictures are shown throughout my blog.

Tuesdays I usually like to share a little piece of me into the mix so my readers have the opportunity to get to know me better! On Wednesdays I like to discuss anything related to travel.  In the beginning I’d discuss some of my favorite places to travel to, but as of late, I’ve been more Los Angeles focus.

Golden Gate Bridge

On Thursdays, I’ve left it pretty open, but in the future, I want to attempt my first link up.  Of course, things aren’t quite finalized yet on that end.

And on Fridays, this is where I like to do any reviews or product giveaways with brands I work with.  I like to think of Fridays as a fun day, so that’s why I love bringing fun giveaways to the blog.

I’ve been known to share a few recipes, talk about art, and of course, my all time favorite wine.   I’m a mix of everything, most likely why I throw myself into the mix of “lifestyle” blogger.  But, please share some love by liking my facebook page, I made it easy to connect via my blog on the right hand side.

And if you’re into photography, or would like to learn a bit more on how to utilize your camera, and the terms, click on my photography tab for a lot of great information.

I hope you enjoy your visit =)

Picking Out Your Summer Fruit!

Some of you may or may not know but I worked in the grocery retail business for 13 years.  I started when I was 15, worked through a variety of departments then landed into management until I came out to California.  I had a few years of working in the produce department where I learned a few tricks of the trade about some of our favorite summer fruits.  I’d like to share those tips with you:

1) Pineapple

To tell when a pineapple is ripe, find one that has a leaf at the very top.  Tug gently on that leaf, if the leaf comes free, you will know that the pineapple is ripe inside.  If the leaf stays, look for another one unless you have a few days before your big party.

2) Watermelon

Yes, there is the sound test.  That is, when you tap on a watermelon, a ripe watermelon will come back sounding hollow, however, there are a few other key signs to look for:

The shape, firmness, and look for a watermelon free of scars and bruises.  Turn the watermelon over on the bottom, there should be a small creamy yellow spot.  This is where the watermelon sat on.  If this spot is more white or greenish, it’s a good indication that the watermelon is not quite ripe.

And lift the watermelon up.  Ripe watermelons have more water weight so they will appear much heavier.

3) Cantaloupes

The Color: When picking out a cantaloupe, the first thing you can look at is the color.  If it’s too green, it’s far from being ripe.  If it’s a nice brown color you have a good chance of it being ripe.

Use your nose: Smell the cantaloupe.  The fragrance should be sweet, but not overwhelming.

4) Peaches

For peaches it comes down to two things: smell and color.  If it smells good, you can bet it will taste good.  How many times have you walked into a grocery store and walked by the peaches and just the fragrance captured you.  Well, make sure a smell is coming out of the ones you pick.

The other thing to look for is with the weight.  The heavier the better because it’s a good sign the moisture has stayed within the fruit, and they’ll be a lot of juicy flavor in each bite.

5) Strawberries

There have been so many times where I’ve had to go through the strawberry cartons while in the produce department.  Strawberries can go bad pretty quick, and it’s a good idea as you go through the cartons to look for any indication of mold.  Also, stay away from the strawberries that have dark spots, or feel soft, they are over riped.  Look for the bright color reds, and the green leafs.

But, the truth is, the sweetest of strawberries will be found from the stands throughout the area, not necessary at the store.

6) Mangoes

Again, utilize your nose, they should have a fresh fragrance.  And when you press on the mango, there should be a little bit of a give, but not too much.  If it’s too firm, it’s far from being ripe.

7) Kiwi’s

To find a ripe kiwi, you should squeeze it a little with your thumb and the pad of your hand.  It will give a little.  Also look for soft spots around the kiwi.  If you find wrinkles, it is over ripe.  It should be consistently colored all away around.

8) Honeydew

Pick your honeydew melon up and sniff at the end where the eye of the melon is.  A sweet scent should come out.  This is a good indication of how ripe the melon is.   Honeydew’s should also feel a little waxy, another good sign of it’s r ipeness.

Have fun this summer with your fruits, I know, for me, this is my favorite time of the year.  I can’t get enough watermelon, cantaloupe, and berries.  And always remember to know the seasons to get the best out of your fruits.

Looking Back on an Amazing Trip in Sonoma, CA!

We went to visit his family up in Sonoma.  They were gracious hosts, and we had a lot of fun, although, it was go, go go since we got there, and we had a bad time going home (we missed our flight) but now, here we are.  Have you ever had a moment where you forgot where you parked your car? Yes, welcome to my world 🙁 I’m better than that, so later today we’re on a mission to find it.

*ahem* So a relay of my trip to Sonoma:

We flew in on the 4th of July and from there they took us to the main Sonoma Plaza where there are festivities happening throughout the park such as: salami toss, art show, and food vendors around.  We were hoping to make it to the salami toss so we could win a couple, but by that time things were closed down.

From there we headed to where we would be staying to rest a little; say hi to Jesse the dog, and a few other relatives that stopped in to see  David.  We then headed back out to the plaza to have a wonderful meal and watch fireworks at the Depot Hotel.  They put on a really GREAT fireworks show up in Sonoma, the finale was one of the best I have seen in years.

Day 2: We loaded up the vehicle, had breakfast at Little Black Bear and hung around the Delta Loop in the boat speeding around and enjoying the summer air.  It made for a very relaxing day.

Day 3: We headed out to San Francisco where we captured amazing photos of the Golden Gate Bridge, drove down the Crooked Street, went to the top of Coit Tower to lookout at the city below, and ate at Boudin in Fisherman Wharf.  This is where I tried oysters for my very first time.  My thoughts on them?  They weren’t bad, but to me, they weren’t good either.  I’m indifferent on them so I made sure to save the rest for those surrounding me that absolutely loved them while I munched on calamari 😉

Day 4: We drove around Wine Country and tried out some wineries.  I will be talking about each individual winery we went to in a future post, but needless to say, by the end of the day I was incredibly happy for the opportunity.  That evening we got together with one of David’s cousin’s, had dinner, and they talked about the old days.

And Day 5 was a day of relaxation at home before heading to the airport where bad karma took over and we ended up missing our flight, and oh, completely forgot what shuttle took us back to our car.  Remember to always jot down where you are, or ask the shuttle driver what to look for when you get back so you don’t end up the way we did *sigh*

Home Sweet Home, but still wishing I was back in Sonoma 😉
